Strategies for Developing Reading Fluency and Accuracy
1. Learn sight words for each grade level so that the words are recognized quickly and automatically in various types of print.
2. Echo and choral read stories with text that is familiar.
3. Look carefully at word endings and little words.
4. Make sure that what is read makes sense.
5. Slow down and chunk across unknown multisyllabic words.
6. Reread the sentence, paragraph or page that was tricky and notice how much better it sounds.
7. Read known texts to develop expression.
8. Read orally for a least 5 minutes daily in addition to silent reading.
9. Take turns reading aloud with a buddy and notice your improvement with practice.
